What's ACT- and how can it help you?
03/03/2020 Amari Lindroos
ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This method of giving therapy can be used to help many types of people who are struggling with different mental disorders. It teaches them to deal with their emotions in a healthy way. This type of therapy helps others accept themselves, and commit to another way of thinking that actually benefits them!
Why is it useful?Over the years, harmful coping mechanisms are developed and they form a deep-rooted pattern of shame and unhealthy habits that are difficult to break. It provides a new perspective to those who think their current way of living is set in stone. It’s not! It’s never too late to make a change for the better.
ACT teaches mindfulness.Instead of avoiding your problems, you can live in the moment and face them head on. It may be unpleasant to confront yourself so directly, but this is the way you can truly understand how your past traumas currently affect the way you try to solve conflicts in the current moment.
You can learn to analyze your negative emotions and know why you’re feeling them. These emotions, as negative as they may be, are there for a reason. You allow yourself to feel them, while at the same time, develop new methods on giving them a place in your daily life without harming yourself. Distracting yourself, sweeping these emotions under the rug and forcing yourself to be “happy” when you’re not is just counter-productive.
