Running in the winter? Keep these 5 tips in mind!

Work-out clothes are about much more than just the looks. They are designed for the sport that you practice, but also for the weather in which you train. Multiple layers will keep you warm when it's cold and windless, but ice cold wind still makes its way through thinner garments. That’s why it is also important to purchase wind-resistant clothing. Is it snowing or raining? Then choose water-repellent clothing as the top layer. Otherwise the sweat in your clothes could freeze.
Just think about an elastic band. It’s flexible, stretchable and always returns to its original shape. Now think about the same elastic band, but when it’s frozen. If you pull it too hard before it’s thawed, it will crack. The same applies more or less to your muscles. If you immediately put a heavy load on your ice-cold muscles, there is a greater risk of injury. Therefore, warm them up before you put them to work.
When it’s really cold, you want to lose as little body heat as possible. A hat is very handy for this and also provides protection for your ears. In addition to the ears, it’s also very important to cover your hands well. Do you find it annoying when you can no longer control your music? Then choose gloves with touchscreen fabric on the finger tips.
This seems logical, but many athletes forget to drink in the winter because it’s simply less hot outside and you seem to sweat less. Still it is important to hydrate because it also reduces the risk of injuries. In the winter it’s more pleasant to drink your water at room temperature.
In the winter most people usually come home from work when it’s already dark out. Make sure that you’re visible when you go outside for a run. Choose shoes and jackets with reflective elements, wear a fluorescent jacket or buy yourself a portable lamp. You can wrap it around your torso to see where you’re running. Double protection!
