Learn the different techniques

The most common massage is the Swedish massage, which combines four types of techniques to relax and heal the muscles. A full body massage uses these three basic techniques. Effleurage is a soft touch over the skin with little pressure. You press up and down a few times, the second moving in the direction of the heart. Petrissage is similar to kneading bread. This reduces the tension of the muscles. Finally, tapotage is the administration of soft, rhythmic strokes with the side of your hand. This technique activates the skin and improves blood circulation.

Focus on the muscles, not the bones

When you give a massage, it is crucial to use your hands to work on the muscles in the neck, shoulders, back, arms, legs and feet. Use a soft hand to locate the soft muscles and then knead them with your hands. Never exert pressure on a person's bones, certainly not on the spine and the tailbone. Are you not sure whether a certain place is made up of muscles or bone? Then go over it with a soft, light touch to feel for a moment.

Apply pressure, but not too much

Knead the muscles with your fingers, palms and the mouse of your hands. Use light pressure to stimulate circulation and loosen the muscles. Certainly do not use too much of your body weight to exert pressure. This could cause pain or even an injury if you massage too enthusiastically. When the balance is right, you should feel the muscles moving and relaxing underneath the skin.

Take your time

The person who’s enjoying your massage should not get the impression that you are in a hurry. Working too quickly makes the session less relaxing and therefore less effective. You also cannot thoroughly massage the muscles with fast movements. Make sure to take your time to work deeper and more thoroughly. A useful tip to avoid a rushed massage is to organize your massage time well in advance. Do you have an hour? Then spend ten minutes on the neck, twenty minutes on the shoulders and back, and ten minutes on the arms, legs and feet.
