Do you have trouble saying ‘no’ to others? This may end in you feeling like a pushover or a doormat who doesn’t have any free will. You may feel as if you’re someone who ‘goes with the flow’ but, that may be even too much or at your own detriment. You may also consider yourself to be a nice person, and are afraid to hurt people’s feelings. However, being assertive does not equate to being mean! There is a huge difference. Being assertive means you know what you want and can communicate that confidently as well as respectfully.
Here are some tips you can use to become more assertive:
Knowing your boundaries is extremely crucial in life. You need to your boundaries so that they can be respected by others. What feels good and what doesn’t? It is important to follow your intuition.
Learn how to debate respectfullyIt’s really helpful to know how to stand up for yourself without being aggressive. This is why you can learn a thing or two from professional debating!
Take time for yourself when you need it to rechargeLearning how to say ‘no’ is so important, if you keep blindly saying yes to everything, resentment builds, and you may even start to become passive aggressive and negative instead! This hurts you and your relationships.
Go step by stepYou don’t have to change everything immediately: starting small is okay! Building a strong foundation is good this means that you’re building confidence that will last you a lifetime.
Practice what you want to say beforehandYou can role play with a friend, a partner, with yourself in the mirror. Think about real life situations or experiences that you feel you could have responded better in and realize the mistakes you made in the past.
